Activities - Sleep in an Igloo
Up at 2300m is the Kanata igloo village.
There are a series of igloos built in the classic eskimo way to conserve heat inside.
In the daytime you can take the telemix up to the plateau and walk to the village for a bit of an explore. Nearby is a chalet restaurant serving food and drinks when you need a bit of refreshment!
If you want more of an adventure, why not spend the night in one of the igloos! Read about Elliot, age 9's
igloo experience.
Journalist Jo Kessel also braved the cold for a night with her sister. Read her report in the
Independent Newspaper
Or if that's not enough of an adventure, ask us about our two day snowshoeing and igloo building expedition, where you walk off into the wilderness with a high mountain guide, build your own igloo and then sleep in it for the night!!
A really unique one off experience!
The night in the igloo village unfolds as follows.....
After catching the last lift up to the plateau you will watch all the skiers ski off the mountain leaving you in the peace and quiet!
Then you will go for a short walk around the igloo village with your guide to watch the sun set and look at the stars, which is a magnificent spectacle, made all the more special by having it all to yourselves!
After your walk you will either go to the chalet where you can settle down to a hearty evening meal before going to your igloos to sleep. Or, (depends on the evening and whether the chalet is operating) you and your guide will cook in the igloos and eat there - a more authentic eskimo experience!!
After dinner you will go to the igloos, snuggle up in your sleeping bags and sleep!!
Each igloo sleeps four people (it's very cosy!) and has a special insulated matress with warm sleeping bags suitable for the cold night time temperatures. They are lit with candles inside, which against the snow create a rather unique and quite romantic atmosphere!
There are toilets accessible throughout the night a short walk away from the igloos but you will need a head torch to navigate your way there in the dark!
It's worth bringing a head torch and warm clothes including hat to sleep in, especially if you feel the cold.
In the morning you are woken up with hot drinks and brekkie!
