Ice Climbing Courses and Trips
What other sport poses the same technical, physical and psychological challenge as ice climbing....?
Hanging 20metres up a frozen waterfall by the tip of an ice axe and crampon front points is not for the faint hearted!! But there's definitely something about it that's addictive...!
...the sensation of a good ice axe placement, the burn in your muscles, the satisfaction as your ice screw winds easily into the ice, the achievement of reaching the top... and the sheer magic of being in an otherwise totally inaccessible place in breathtaking scenery!
We have a huge variety and some of the best ice climbing in the Southern French Alps on our doorstep and ice climbers and mountaineers come from all over the world to climb here.
But you don't need to be an expert as there are waterfalls, ridges and gullies for all levels.
So whether you are a total beginner wanting your first taste of ice climbing or a seasoned climber wanting a winter challenge to add to your list of adventures, there is something for you here.
We have put together two courses aimed at beginners who want to gain technical ice climbing skills, learn how to climb safely and explore some of the magnificent falls in the Southern French Alps. You don't need to have had any previous ice climbing experience to come on one of our beginners courses but you will need a good level of fitness. Rock climbing and mountaineering experience is an advantage but not a pre-requisite!
Ice climbing can be a very dangerous sport and it is important to understand the behaviour of different types of ice, have a knowledge of local conditions, high technical skills and a good level of fitness. We only use UIAGM qualified high mountain guides with excellent local knowledge and who are passionate about ice climbing to lead our ice climbing courses.
We can also provide courses and trips for more experienced climbers who want to explore this fantastic area with one of our local UIAGM guides. After beginner level the guide ratio for ice climbing is 1:2. If you would like us to put together a trip for you, please contact us.
