French Alps accommodation Gites are perfect. If you like youth hostelling in the UK, you will love staying in Gites in France.
They are a bit like youth hostels in that you stay in dormitory style accommodation and can be either self catering or catered for. Some of the gites have double and family rooms as well as larger dormitories and it is possible to book them for yourselves.
They all have communal rooms for meetings, socialising and eating so are great places to meet people.
The standards vary quite considerably so we have only chosen the ones we would like to stay in to put on our site.
On an alpine plateau youth hostel
Situated, as its name suggests, on a high mountain plateau with exceptional views, this is a great high quality youth hostel style accommodation sleeping up to 70 people. It is perfect for groups, families or individuals.
The building is newly refurbished in a warm alpine chalet style to a high standard.
There are 8 double rooms, 3 four person rooms with a double bed and bunks, 1 five person room, 5 six person rooms with a double bed and singles and bunks, and 2 three person rooms with a double and single bed.
Three of the double rooms have an ensuite shower but the rest share shower and other sanitary facilities. These are clean and well maintained.
The group or communal facilities are excellent with a beautiful relaxation lounge with leather sofas and open fire for cosy winter evenings, a TV lounge, children's chill out area and great open plan dining room and bar with mountain views.
In winter there is also a sauna and outdoor hot tub.
The food is buffet style and includes local produce and specialities of the region.
On an Alpine Plateau is ideally situated near the village of Ancelle close to downhill skiing, cross country skiing and other winter activities in the winter and a great central location for summer activities.
In the village there are restaurants bars and a regular market.

Gite D'Etape Les Paris
Denis rennovated this old farmhouse himself and has been running the Gite for over 20 years.
It's set in beautiful countryside at the beginning of the Valgaudemar valley and is a popular starting point for the Tour du Vieux Chaillol long distance walk.
It is dormitory style accommodation with a beautiful vaulted dining and lounge area. There's also a double room you can book if want a bit of privacy!
There's a kitchen you can use or you can indulge in Denis's home cooking and go full or half board!

The Bayard Centre
The Bayard Centre is a youth hostel style accommodation perfectly situated on the edge of the Gap Bayard Golf Course which is also a cross country ski base in winter.
It is also well located for other summer alpine activities and not far from downhill ski villages and winter activities. The nearest village is the medieval village of St Bonnet just 10 minutes drive away.
There are walks and waymarked running routes with circuit training stations situated around the course that are open to anyone as well as mountain biking routes. In winter there are of course cross country ski pistes but also snowshoeing walks straight from the door.
There are a range of rooms including twin and double rooms, family rooms and dormitories sleeping up to 6 people. They are all ensuite and newly refurbished. The standard is quite basic but very clean and well maintained and the centre is a friendly place to stay.
There is a restaurant where you can eat breakfast, lunch and evening meals with the other guests and look out onto the golf course or cross country ski pistes and mountains beyond. The food is good and includes specialities of the region. There is also a bar.
Outside is a sun terrace with great views and relaxing atmosphere.
This is a great place to stay for small groups or families wanting good value accommodation in a good location.
